FAQ:

Audio USB problem with Mac OS 10.5.7

Answer:

There are some new bugs in the last Apple USB driver that are part of the 10.5.7 update. Some controls of several audio USB devices are not available anymore from the /Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup.app. Moreover, as soon as you transmit audio with the mic of the USB device you get a terrible noise on the right channel forever (even after a reboot).

There are 2 possible solutions:

A) Switch to a different Java version:

  1. Start the Java Preferences (/Applications/Utilities/Java/Java Preferences.app)
  2. In the General Tab move Java SE 6 on the top or the 2 lists (applet versions & application versions).
  3. Restart Koala

B) Downgrade to 10.5.6 version of the Apple USB Audio component.

You can downgrade this component of the System (/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBAudio.kext) as it is described at this apple discussion.
To do so you have to :

  1. Do a copy (backup) of the file /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBAudio.kext.
  2. Get the AppleUSBAudio? .kext version that was in Mac OS 10.5.6. You can use "Time Machine" to get it or download the attachment of this topic.
  3. Replace the /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBAudio.kext directory with the one from 10.5.6.
  4. Use the "/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app" program to repair the files permission as it described in this page.
  5. Reboot.

About the Pheonix Audio USB Devices (Email from the Vice-President):

" As you point out Apple has recently changed their software. Our new versions of Duet do not have a problem with this change but our older units do not always get recognized. We are looking into this in hopes that we may find a setting or adjustment on Apples that will correct this. Unfortunately we currently do not have a solution for our older versions of Duet other than reverting back to the older version of Apple software for which it was designed for.
I am sorry for the inconvenience please check back in a week or so to see if we have come up with a work around.
